HIKING GOLD NUGGET WAYSIDE

Found at the start of Southern Oregon’s Rogue-Umpqua Scenic byway, Gold Nugget Wayside is a remote oasis. The lovely, cascading falls make a perfect place for picnics, fishing, birdwatching, hiking, and even swimming!

At the trailhead, take time to read about the history of the area and its significance to the Takelma people, the original inhabitants of the land. The short river trail offers access to the shoreline and several accessible picnic tables as well as amazing views of raging rapids along the mighty Rogue River. The further you travel along the river, the less maintained the trail is, so be prepared with insect repellent as the grass is tall in some areas.

Gold Nugget Wayside is the perfect place for anyone wanting to get into hiking, as it offers a flat yet scenic hike. Along the river, you may encounter mallard ducks, river otters, deer, eagles and ospreys, and other wild animals. Be sure to bring a camera to capture some of the great views along the river, as well as these beautiful creatures!
